Meet the Director
Maria Stewart • Director of ATSIT
ATSIT is Aboriginal-owned and lead by Maria Stewart, a respected member of the Yankunytatjara language group. With over 37 years of professional interpreting experience, Maria is recognised as a leader in the field, dedicated to preserving and promoting Aboriginal languages.

Maria holds a Diploma in Interpreting Languages Other Than English (LOTE) in Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara and is dual-certified by NAATI as a Provisional Interpreter in Pitjantjatjara-English and Yankunytjatjara-English.
With over 37 years of experience, Maria has built an exceptional career as a professional interpreter, providing her expertise across a diverse range of sectors including Government, Justice, Law Enforcement, Courts, Health, NDIS, Aged Care, Community Services, Legal Services, Education, Social Services, Child Protection, Business, and Finance.
Beyond interpreting, Maria has more than a decade of experience in translation, playing a key role in high-profile national projects.
A respected leader in her field, Maria is actively involved in interpreter training and development. Maria is involved in NAATI Role Play assessments, mentoring, and marking, and has served as an assistant lecturer in the Languages Diploma program at TAFE SA, helping to shape and inspire the next generation of interpreters.
Maria’s dedication, extensive experience, and cultural insight position her as a vital leader to collaborate with in the interpreting and translation industry.
